About me and my work
I have a Ph.D., Master’s Degree, and Bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. I am licensed by the State of New York to practice as a psychotherapist.
In my practice, I emulate the philosophy of the old masters who believed that during the therapeutic process the client and the therapist affect, teach, and learn from each other.
I view the development of a therapeutic relationship as the most important ingredient of successful therapy. Initially, I want to make you FEEL better, but later, we will work together on GETTING you better.
Psychotherapy is not a technique, but a process. A variety of therapies are like tools in a toolbox; we need different tools to loosen and adjust different nots and bolts. Thus, we treat depression with Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Borderline Issues with Dialectical Behavior Therapy; Object Relations Therapies, and Psychodynamic Therapies when treating alcoholism and the like.
In addition, I have worked with diverse populations: white and African Americans, Latinos (Mexicans, Salvadorans, Honduregnos, natives from Guatemala, and the American Indians), LGBTQ clients, Children, and adolescents.
Human dignity and human worth are at the center of my work, the confidentiality of my sources notwithstanding.

My Specialties
Family Conflicts
Child or Adolescent Issues
“Every form of addiction is bad, no matter whether the narcotic is alcohol or morphine or idealism.” Carl Jung
If you want to stop drinking or using other substances, you are in the right place. I can help. I offer Individual Counselling, Group Theraphy, and Family Support Groups for alcoholics, drug addicted, and/or the family members of addicted people.
For over four decades, I have been involved in 12-step programs of Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Al-Anon, and (Dr. Low’s) Recovery Incorporated; I am familiar with the methods of Clubs of Treated Alcoholics. Alcoholism, and addiction in general, is a family illness, and in my treatment I involve the whole family, whenever possible.
I do not subscribe to “one size fits all” in my practice. What is lacking, particularly in the states of the former Yugoslavia, are the intermediate interventions, outpatients setting with the focus on Group Therapies, where I prepare the patients for the ongoing social support of A.A. and the like. When the patients are not ready to stop using alcohol and/or substances, I engage in Harm Reduction Therapies and Motivational Interviewing.
“Since the defective relations with other human beings have nearly always been the immediate cause of our woes, including our alcoholism, no field of investigation could yield more satisfying and valuable rewards than this one.” A.A. Twelve Steps
If you are looking to improve relations with others, you may join in Individual, Couples, or Family Counseling. To be well-functioning people, we need to know how to relate to our children, marriage partners, family members, work colleagues, and society in general.
Families are the natural environments where we learn how to form relationships. Sometimes, the transmission of values, behaviors and attitudes is trans-generational in nature and scope. When a conflict or problem arises for one or more members of the family unit, it usually has a ripple effect over everyone.
I may start our work with the identified patient and end up working with the entire family to resolve the challenges of relationships and communication. I work with children and teens to help them adjust to the many issues families face. That may involve modifying or changing the family structure, hierarchies within it, power relationships and gender roles.
I work with children (10 or older) and adolescents with behavioral and learning difficulties. I bring with me a wealth of experience from two continents as an immigrant.
